tamimu

Tamimu Salifu,

Youth Alive found Tamimu in 2002 when he was 12 years old. He was living in the lorry park.

"My father died and my mother could not support me or my 4 siblings. I worked pushing a heavy cart loaded with goods around the lorry park to the market. It was very hard. I had nothing. I know street life is very bad; I joined a gang and was always in trouble and fighting.

When Youth Alive found me they showed me to their drop in center. I was accepted under their programme but they didn't dictate to me. I was so far behind at school I wanted to learn a trade instead. I was given three weeks of counselling and advice about different trades. I decided I wanted to learn to fix fridges and air conditioners. I was fully supported in an apprenticeship. After 3 years I was fully qualified. Youth Alive gave me a business space, rent free and brand new tools. I was able to start my own business.

Now at 20, my life is so different, I had no idea what learning a trade meant. Youth Alive have allowed me to prove myself. I support my mother and my brothers and sisters, paying for rent and food for all of us."

Tamimu's business is doing very well and he's so full of confidence. He has volunteered to speak to other younger children to encourage them to stick at their education or training to leave street life behind.
