extra classes

Youth Alive beneficiaries have recently been gathering in the classrooms after school to partake in all kinds of after school classes - from literacy to mathematics, arts and science. After school classes and tutoring are a key component to any young person's education. In the public school system in Ghana, classrooms often have over 100 children per class and are under-resourced. It is difficult in these circumstances to provide pupils with special attention from teachers, or provided for their individual needs. Without a supportive home environment, youth can quickly become discouraged and fall behind.

Many families in Ghana hire tutors to hold after school classes for their children. However, for those who can't afford it, it is easy to fall behind.

Youth Alive holds classes whenever volunteers are available to teach, and is enthusiastic about supporting children's education as much as they can. The classes are open and free to all children - not just the beneficiaries - and try to incorporate class material whenever they can.

Classes are fun and interdisciplinary, including basic literacy and multiplication, as well as activities such as holding debates, writing stories, environmental rants and painting a mural on the rights of children.

Youth are encouraged to think outside the box and engage with their world and class material - something that school environments often do not have the means to create. They also have access to an equipped library to further their opportunities to read. Volunteers to help teach and tutor are appreciated and welcomed, for classes to remain consistent.
